Preference Recovery Sessions

Focused sessions on undo, reset, backup of preferences, and the hour after someone changes a setting they did not mean to change.

People rarely complain that a utility has too few settings. They complain that they touched one and cannot put it back. Preference Recovery Sessions look only at that hour.

Testers begin with a prepared state: auto-brightness off, weather units switched, alarm sound replaced, hidden files shown, notification quiet hours set to a window they did not intend. Their task is to restore the earlier state without a hint sheet.

We note whether they look for Reset, whether they understand a confirmation, and whether a backup of preferences exists in a place they would think to open. If the only recovery is reinstalling the app, we say so plainly.

These sessions are shorter than a full audit. Four to six testers is usual. The memo is organised by recovery path rather than by the whole tree.

Useful when a support inbox is full of “I changed something and now the torch strobes” or “the temperature is in Fahrenheit and I cannot find units.”
